Pedestrian

Pedestrians can be unpredictable, which makes it more important to use extra caution as a driver. Here are a few tips to help you safely navigate the road with pedestrians:

  1. Adhere to posted school or playground zone speed limits. School zones, especially during drop off and pick up times, are high-traffic pedestrian areas, and children can be especially unpredictable.
  2. Pedestrians can be anywhere and sometimes can be shielded by obstructions like trees or parked cars. Whether you’re driving downtown or on a quiet highway, always scan the road and the surrounding areas.
  3. Failing to yield to a pedestrian at a marked crosswalk is illegal. If a driver encounters a pedestrian jaywalking, it is still the driver’s responsibility to avoid a collision.
Always remember: “Right of way is given, not taken.” So slow down, scan the road, and always be vigilant behind the wheel.
